What is a Free Spirit?

For most people, a free spirit is the epitome of Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand’s role in the motion picture. (2004) Meet the Fockers. Ben Stiller’s eccentric, hippie-going, ganja-smoking, vegan parents are stereotyped as free-spirited.

The term free spirit is often accompanied by derogatory or condescending undertones as society generally views a free spirit as “one who does not follow social norms or expectations” in what is characterized as “generally acceptable codes of conduct or rules of social behaviour. “

Furthermore, a free spirit has been characterized as someone who does not seek to be accepted by the public, society, or any social group and is not looking to fit in but somewhat out. A free spirit does not seek the approval of others and is widely labelled as an outcast.

The Cambridge English Dictionary defines a free spirit as “a person who does what they want with enjoyment and pleasure and does not feel limited by the usual rules of social behaviour.”

Let’s set the record straight. 

A free spirit isn’t always reefer smoking, orgy going outcast. When we label the free spirits as fitting into a specific mould, we allow ourselves to be herded, sorted and grouped.

Free Spirits seek freedom above all else through external and internal oppression. Their path choice enables them to hear their soul’s voice, become free from pain and enslavement, and fulfil their dreams.

A free spirit is either an adventure or home-body, an individual or loner, an outspoken extroverted introvert. The freedom of the soul is an ESSENCE and never an external image.

When we walk our free path, we also go our way from the heart to the soul. Essentially, the spiritual paths we attempt will be carved out of society’s constraints.
